In previous article, I mentioned Top 5 Best Screen Recorders For Mac (Free) but in this article, I have mentioned how to password protect a folder in Mac using Disk Utility or using third party look like Encrypto.
Not all the files are supposed to be viewed by everyone. Your friends and family did not appreciate this truth, but that's just how it's sometimes. Luckily, MacBook owners can protect their sensitive folders and files from others by password protecting. There are two ways to password protect a folder in mac. One is built in Apple Mac OS which allows folders to be turned into protected disk images and second is by using a third-party app. So here we will tell you both methods by which you can easily password protect a folder in mac.
Password Protect a Folder in Mac by using Disk Utility
1 Open the Application folder by pressing the Command + Shift + A.
2 In the Application folder, you can see the Utilities folder. Open it.
3 Now open the Disk Utility.
4 Click on the File option. Here select the New Image option and then you have to select the Image folder option.
5 Now select the folder you want to protect and click on the open option.
6 Click on the Image Format option in the drop-down menu and select read/write option.
7 Click on the Encryption drop-down menu and select 128-bit AES encryption.
8 Now you have to enter the password for this folder twice and click choose.
9 Just give the name to the locked disk image and press enter.
10 After successful creation, you have to click on the done.
This DMG file is not similar to your folder, however, it is just a copy of the folder's contents in a disk image format. That disk image is protected by a password and it required a password before it can be mounted and read. The original folder has been untouched and isn't encrypted. Open the disk image and enter your password to ensure you can access the image and so it contains all the folder's files. Once you are sure that everything worked smoothly, then delete the unencrypted folder. It will leave only the encrypted DMG behind.
Password Protect a Folder in Mac by using Encrypto
Encrypto is the third-party encryption tool which is easily available in the Mac App Store. It gives greater simplicity of use in encryption and decryption and based on an easy drag-and-drop procedure.
1 You have to install the Encrypto from the Mac app store.
2 Now open the Encrypto from the Application folder.
3 Here you can drag the folder which you want to password protect onto the Encryptors window.
4 So now enter the password by which you want to protect the folder. Here you can also provide the hint which is optional and it will help you when you don’t remember your password.
5 Once you set the password and option hint, click on the Encrypt option to encrypt the folder.
6 When the encryption is successfully finished, then drag the resulting Encrypto archive to a safe place. You can also try the “Share file>Save As..” to save the Encrypto archive to another location.
7 If you want to open the folder, you have to double click on the Encrypto archive. Enter your password and click on the Decrypt option to unlock the folder.
